Maharashtra seeks GST exemption on medical equipment required for Covid-19 treatment

In his letter to Sitharaman, Ajit Pawar said that the state government has received requests from corporate and NGOs to exempt COVID-19 outbreak-related medical equipment from the GST.

Maharashtra Finance Minister Ajit Pawar on Friday wrote to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman asking for exemption of Goods and Service Tax (GST) on medical equipment required to combat Covid-19. He asked for exemption for equipment like 3-ply mask, N95 mask, personal protective equipment(PPE), testing kits and ventilators.

In his letter to Sitharaman, Ajit Pawar said that the state government has received requests from corporate and NGOs to exempt COVID-19 outbreak-related medical equipment from the GST.

“Therefore, to make them readily available, it is required to consider the exemption on these medical equipment. Exemptions of GST on medical equipment would be highly helpful in combating the novel coronavirus in the country,” the letter read.

Ajit Pawar told the Union minister that the number of Covid-19 patients was increasing day by day in Maharashtra. He said the mantra of ‘trace, track, test and treat’ was being followed to fight the coronavirus outbreak.
